The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
By: André | February 4th, 2010
Just like Sergio Leone’s movie, there are the Good, the Bad and the Ugly in Flamengo. The first one, of course, it’s the attack. The ‘O Império do Amor‘ (Love Empire -o Empire of Love?) is the good. Not only the Emperor, Adriano, and Vagner Love are doing their job, but also Vinicius Pacheco is on a great form. I never thought I’d see him playing for Flamengo again, because of his (not so great) last passages in the team and now I must confess I’m surprised.
The Ugly, obviously, is the defence. Six matches and 12 goals scored against us. Terrible numbers. Not to count the five penalty kicks and the four red cards. What’s wrong? Come back soon Maldonado!
The Bad I don’t know yet who he is. There are two options: Marcos Braz and Petkovic. Both of them did terrible things last week and won the League last year. Without Marcos Braz it wouldn’t be Pet and without Pet the title wouldn’t exist. Now things are going foward but last night result, despite puting us on the semi-finals, was terrible (3-3).

You know what, André, Pet made a mistake but he was man enough to atone for it and apologize to the fans. It was understandable, too. Pet’s a warrior, a competitor. Take that away from him and he’s no use to anyone. This was his 150th game for Flamengo. He was taken out at half-time and overreacted. He made a mistake. But he owned up to it and apologized to the fans, He’s a good man, who’s given a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to the team, so we should cut him some slack and forgive him.
As for Marcos Braz, the action he took was correct. If Pet had been chosen for antidoping testing and he wasn’t there, Marcos and the entire medical team would have been out on their ass, because the suspicion would have fallen on them. Pet didn’t think this consequence of his actions through, and it was unfair to Marcos Braz’s authority. I think Marcos Braz is a good man and an excellent administrator. He’s sometimes rough around the edges, but he stepped back from the abyss of a useless confrontation — in terms of its effect on the team and the fans — and deserves a great deal of credit for that.
So. Pet did something bad, but NOT awful. We ALL make mistakes in life. The important thing is he apologized. Marcos Braz was correct to discipline Pet. Braz ALMOST went too far, but took the big, general team welfare view, rather than the personal, narrow, punitive view. for that, he deserves A LOT of credit.
Finally, the person behind the scenes no one ever talks about: President Patricia Amorim. Unlike these guys she had to deal with, their posturing and childishness, she was the ADULT in all of this. I’m certain she told BOTH of them to stop acting like children and dial it back. They did. And she never took any credit, didn’t see the need to “APARECER”.
Conclusion:
THE GOOD: Patricia, Marcos, and the Empire of Love
THE BAD: Pet, for making a stupid mistake
THE UGLY: Flamengo’s defense, FOR LEAKING LIKE A SIEVE and Marcos Braz, FOR ALMOST BREAKING UP THE EMPIRE OF LOVE (which isn’t just two guys, but the WHOLE F’ING BALL OF WAX: PLAYERS, COACH, CARTOLAS, CLUB, FANS, COLORS, HISTORY, TRADITION!
To me, President Patricia Amorim is the UNSUNG HERO in the novela Pet. I just want to recognize what she did, even if she doesn’t feel the need to take credit for it. That’s just AWESOME. Patricia Amorim has grown tremendously in my estimation.
