Weekend updateBy: André | April 8th, 2011
So, what’s news?
Well, I can’t say the fact that Flamengo have not lost a single match this season is something new as the last time I posted a text here they were winning every game. So, with regard to our unbeaten run, everything continues to be same.
There is one thing new though. We started drawing matches and because of that there is this (small) risk that we may end up not qualifying to the Taça Rio semifinals, and to guarantee this will not happen, Flamengo must win this weekend’s match. It won’t be easy, I know, as they’ll be facing Botafogo, and this is a big derby. I don’t know if you recall the last time we played against them and based on that and both clubs’ recent form, I think we shouldn’t worry about losing this one.
About the Copa do Brasil, we’ve reached its round of 16 and the next match will be in two weeks, against a small little known side called Horizonte. Flamengo may not have been playing spectacularly but in Copa do Brasil, during the first two rounds, if you beat the home team on a difference of two or more goals, you don’t play to play the second leg. And as the big teams, during these two first rounds always play the first leg away, Flamengo managed to not play the second legs of both opportunities.
We sure need a powerful striker, a solid center back and a good left-back for the rest of the season, but we’ve been doing good so far, and rumors are that Flamengo may sign Juan and Vágner Love during the summer window. But you know… they’re only rumors. We should focus on next match and worry about qualifying to the Taça Rio semifinals, which I’m positive we will.
